The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) is one of the best and most popular fairy tale novels by Roald Dahl.
“I only write about things that are exciting or funny. Children know I'm on their side.” – these words of Roald Dahl exactly reflect the character of one of his most brilliant children’s novels called “The BFG”.«Valeriy Shevchuk: Four Novels»
Author: Valeriy Shevchuk
Age group: adults |
The parable novel “On a Humble Field” observes the epoch of the young Ukrainian Christianity in its confrontation against paganism on a background of painful contradictions between the church dogma and real life.
“Eye of the Abyss” is a dystopia, written after the collapse of the USSR. According to the author, “this is the allusion of totalitarianism, which might be named “the House of the black world… with the help of this novel I seemed to sweep the soot of this black world out of myself, as when cleaning chimneys”.
Any attempt to serve any ideological system is sooner or later to collapse, because the human nature with its immense Divine origin is impossible to fit into any mindset scheme artificially created by human mind. The Orthodox culture of the Middle Ages is vividly depicted in this novel.
Extraordinary flexible, moving subtly from the real to the unreal, the author tells us about the relativity of everything apart from good and evil in his most uncanny yet most candid novel called “The Murrain”.
«I Served the King of England»
Age group: adults |
“I Served the King of England” are memoirs of a greedy and lascivious waiter, growing up right before the reader’s eyes. This is a life story of a Central Europe dweller, happened to be “lucky enough” to hit upon 30s-40s XX century. The historical development of the action itself is well enough not to invent something extraordinary in the novel; what remains for the writer is just to capture the details of the protagonist’s personal route within the highway that is one for all. The refrain of the book is “the incredible becomes real”. With time, the caterpillar turns into a butterfly and the lascivious lad — into St. Francis.
