The Mistress of Pontida is a unique for Ukrainian literature adventurous travel around the labyrinths of royal courtyards, lodges of secret societies, faery masquerades, traps of suspicious barrelhouses and prison cells in pre-revolution Europe of 1770s.The protagonist of this venturesome and deeply philosophical novel is a Ukrainian nobleman Cossack Yuri Roslavets. Bedazzled by the lady of his heart who is a pretender to the Emperor`s throne, he is «chasing the apparition» of his passion from Paris through Germany to Venice, Napoli, Rome and Pisa, surviving stunning adventures, experiencing worldly wisdom, becoming imbued with somewhat fatalistic understanding of life and the world around.
This literary masterpiece was written in 1987 in New York by Yuri Kosach (1908-1990), a controversial Ukrainian author, an outstanding though still little known master of Ukrainian historical prose, a nephew of an iconic Ukrainian writer Lesia Ukrayinka.
