Yuri Vynnychuk

Yuri Vynnychuk is one of the largest figures of the modern Ukrainian literary process: he is an outstanding adult and children’s writer, a poet, a translator, a compiler, an actor, an editor, a columnist, a mystifier, the founder of a cabaret-theatre.

Born March 18th, 1952 in Ivano Frankivsk. Graduated from the Precarpathian V. Stefanyk University. In 1974 he moved to Lviv and worked as a loader as well as a graphic designer.

In 1987 he organized a cabaret-theatre-band called “Don’t Worry!”.

He is the author of a poetry collection called “Reflection” (1990), prose collections called “The Flash” (1990), “The Windows of the Frozen Time” (2001), “A Place for the Dragon” (2002, 2004), novellas “Welcome to Rattown” (1992), “The Nightmaids” (1992, 1995, 2003), “The Harem Life” (1996, 1999, 2002), novels “Malva Landa” (2003, 2004) and “Spring Games in Autumn Gardens” (2006), local history books “The Legends of Lviv” (six editions 1999-2004), “Taverns of Lviv” (four editions 2000-2004), “The Mysteries of Lviv Coffee” (2001, 2003, 2004), mythological encyclopedia “The Book of Beasts” (2003).

He is also a compiler of numerous anthologies of Ukrainian science fiction of XIX century “A Fiery Dragon” (1989), of Ukrainian Fairy Tales “A Silver Book of Fairy Tales” (1993), the Ukrainian literary works about devils “Devil Knows What” (2004), book series “Yuri Vynnychuk presents…”, “A Fairytale Treasury”, “Fest Prose” etc.

His works have been translated in England, the USA, Canada, Argentina, France, Germany, Croatia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Poland, Japan, Belarus, Russia.

Two cartoons were filmed after his fairytales.
